Asia Championship Winter 2019: Feature Match Swiss Round 3
For our Swiss Round 3 Feature Match today, we have Cheng Yao [TW] vs Angelino [PH].
Angelino started with Sekka‘s light, drawing two. It was then used for its second effect, shuffling Speedroid Taketomborg to draw one. Angelino proceeded to special summon Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and Normal Summoned Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss.
Maxx “C” was used in response to Graff’s summon, but Angelino still proceeded to Xyz Summon Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss. Two copies of Gallis the Star Beast and Tour Guide of the Underworld were milled. Beatrice the Eternal Lady was then brought out.
It is now Cheng Yao’s turn. He started by activating Infinite Impermanence on Beatrice, prompting Angelino to chain Beatrice’s effect, milling Fairy Tail – Snow. Dante, being sent to the graveyard as an Xyz Material, returned Rubic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from the graveyard.
Cheng Yao proceeded with a series of Link Summons, aided by his Sky Striker engine & Knightmare Link Toolbox (Cereberus, Phoenix, Mermaid). He was temporary interrupted when Destiny HERO – Malicious was flipped face down by Fairy Tail – Snow, but he still managed to clear Beatrice away harmlessly with Sheorcust Dingirsu.
That turn brought Cheng Yao miles ahead of resources, winning him the first game.
Angelino started first and Normal Summoned Barbar, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and Special Summoned Farfa. Both were used to Xyz Summon Dante again.
Sekka’s Light Speedroid Terrotop and Ghost Belle were milled by Dante’s effect. Beatrice was summoned out after Sekka’s Light graveyard effect was used. For Beatrice’s summon, Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss was used. Tour Guide was added to Angelino’s hand by Scarm’s effect.
Cheng Yao countered Beatrice with Infinite Impermanence again, and Beatrice detached Dante to mill Fairy Tail – Snow.
Cheng Yao attempted the same game plan as before, but this time round, Snow’s interruption was able to crucially interrupt the Link Summons by flipping Orcust Cymbal Skeleton face down, forcing Cheng Yao to end his turn.
Angelino summoned Tour Guide but its attempt to resolve its effect was rejected Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade. Angelino then proceeded to Link Summon Knightmare Unicorn with his three on-field monsters, clearing Cymbal Skeleton with its effect and destroying Cheng Yao’s Knightmare Mermaid by battle.
Cheng Yao was down to no cards in hand and field. He drew and sighed heavily. It was Maxx “C”, but it came too late. While it managed to discourage Angelino’s plays the following turn, but Cheng Yao had to take direct attacks from Unicorn and Speedroid Terrotop for 3400 ATK.
Cheng Yao’s conceded upon drawing the following turn.
The two players went into Game 3 without siding, as time was called at the end of Game 2. By the time call procedure, the game will end in four turns. (0-1-2-3)
By the verdict of the dice roll, Cheng Yao would have to take the first turn. (He rolled 6 against Angelino’s 5.) This would leave him with one less Battle Phase, a disadvantageous position to be in in this race for damage. He sighed and rolled his eyes at the situation.
Cheng Yao summoned Armageddon Knight and managed to mill Malicious. Malicious was stopped by Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring when it tried to activate its effect. Cheng Yao set a card and end his turn.
Similar to the previous games, Farfa and Graff were summoned out, but this time to Link Summon into Cherubini. Cherubini milled Fiendish Rhino Warrior, which in turn sent Libic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss.
Graff summoned Scarm, Libic Summoned Cir, allowing Angelino to call out Dante again. Dante managed to mill Barbar among the three cards. 900LP damage was dealt in exchange for banishing three cards.
The ATK-boosted Cherubini took out Armageddon Knight; Graff and Dante attacked directly. This left Cheng Yao with 3100 points. Unsurprisingly, Beatrice was brought out in Main Phase 2.
Cheng Yao drew and pondered. It was his last turn of the match. Reinforcement of the Army was activated, fetching him Armageddon Knight to mill Malicious again. This time, Malicious was able to resolve successfully.
Both DARK monsters were used to Link Summon Knightmare Phoenix, which was immediately used for Knightmare Mermaid which discarded Grepher for its effect. Angelino responded with a Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit at this point, recognizing that this effect would push Cheng Yao forward in terms of resources.
Losing his field monster, Cheng Yao proceeded to offer his handshake, conceding the duel.
Opening with no ‘Hand Traps’, Cheng Yao was unable to disrupt Angelino’s plays. Luck played a part in the final game, allowing Angelino to deal extra damage with Barbar. Ghost Ogre was the final nail in the coffin.
