Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread
High-leveled tuners have never been popular among players. However, this may be about to change with the introduction of the latest tuner in CIBR (Circuit Breaker) – Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread.
Bouryuu no Senritsu – Destrudo
(Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread)
DARK Dragon / Tuner Effect
You can only use the [(1)st] effect with this card’s name once per turn.
(1) If this card is in your hand or Graveyard: You can pay half your LP, then target 1 Level 6 or lower monster you control; Special Summon this card, but its Level is reduced by the Level of the targeted monster, also place this card on the bottom of the Deck when it leaves the field.
Armageddon Knight is now a one-card Level 7 Synchro Summon, along with the cost of half your Life Points.
By summoning Armageddon Knight, send Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread to the graveyard. Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread can then use its effect, targeting Armageddon Knight to special summon itself for a 4+3 Synchro Summon.
Armageddon Knight can be tutored out by Summoner Monk and searched by Reinforcements of the Army. Dark Grepher can also perform similar feats and is also a Warrior-type. These are ways to improve the consistency of the engine.
Other methods to get Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread into the graveyard are available too. Apart from the obvious Foolish Burial, there are Darkflare Dragon, Number 95: Galaxy-Eyes Dark Matter Dragon and Dragon’s Shrine.
Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread‘s stats place it at an interesting position.
- Being a DARK Attribute, it can be used as a banish fodder for Allure of Darkness.
- Being Level 7 allows it to be used for Sacred Sword of Seven Stars.
- Finally, at 1000ATK, it fits the cost for Cards of Consonance.
Out of all three options, Cards of Consonance stands out the most, since it can get Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread for it to use its effect while providing draw power.
Being below 1500ATK, multiple copies can be gathered onto the field with the use of Inferno Reckless Summon. This can allow for Rank 7 summons.
One notable mention would be Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack, which can summon two Token Monsters and tribute itself to clear an opponent’s monster. The Token Monsters can then be used for summoning Link Spider and Missus Radiant to allow more Extra Deck monsters to be summoned. Considering that there is a new Mecha Phantom Beast monster, and with Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack getting a reprint, this play might be worth taking note of.
Using Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread as an Xyz Material would also yard it instead of sending it back to the deck.
Previously, there are other engines to rush out Level 7 Synchro Monsters. One being Mathematician milling Felis, Lightsworn Archer and another being Galaxy Soldier fetching Galaxy Serpent. Now with Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread, players will have another option to choose from.
The Level 7 Synchro Monsters are not as plenty as Level 8. However, there still exist a few niche options.
PSY-Framelord Zeta is a staple Level 7, a fact which players may be unaware of. Depending on the metagame, it might prove to be useful in the future. The Level 7 Synchro toolbox also allows you to clear the field with Black Rose Dragon or limit your opponent’s moves with Moonlight Rose Dragon.
Odd-Eyes Meteorburst Dragon prevents your opponent’s monsters from activating their effects during the Battle Phase, nullifying threats such as Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon.
Yazi, Evil of the Yang Zing can trade with backrow or Monster threats. Then there are Clear Wing Synchro Dragon and Clear Wing Fast Dragon, which are already popular in the current metagame due to the Windwitch engine.
Perhaps most importantly, Ancient Fairy Dragon can be accessed via the engine. Its effect facilitates the use of multiple Field Spells in a deck and syngergises with Chicken Game to search out other Field Spells. This would greatly help decks with Limited and Semi-Limited Field Spells, such as Dragonic Diagram and Union Hangar.
Last but not least, Power Tool Dragon is worthy of mention since it can search out Megamorph.
Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon
It is possible to summon Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon with Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread.
Hieratic Dragon of Nuit
LIGHT Dragon / Effect
Once per turn, during either player’s turn, when this face-up card on the field is targeted by a Spell Card, Trap Card, or card effect: Special Summon 1 Dragon-Type Normal Monster from your hand, Deck, or Graveyard, and make its ATK and DEF 0.
Hieratic Dragon of Nuit comes into play for this Synchro Summon. Targeting it with Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread‘s effect, you can special summon Level 1 Tuner Dragon Flamevell. By tuning for a Level 7 Synchro Monster with Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread and Hieratic Dragon of Nuit, and later with Dragon Flamevell, you can summon out Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon.
Since Hieratic Dragon of Nuit is LIGHT Attribute, one can also summon out Michael, the Arch-Lightsworn, which requires 1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner LIGHT monsters. Exploder Dragonwing can also be accessed and may be lethal depending on the situation.
Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread‘s cost is pretty steep for a single Level 7 Synchro Monster. It is not something that can be ignored. This implies that a deck circling around Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread does not have the same luxury as others of playing cards such as Cosmic Cyclone and Solemn Strike.
Some players are hopeful that Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread might revive the fallen DARK Synchro Deck. However, there are a couple of challenges. Firstly, without Level Eater, it would be tougher for level adjusting. Secondly, a viable Link Monster and proper planning is needed for the deck to flood the field like before. However, for now, the iconic Decode Talker is a decent option with a worthy effect.
Thankfully, Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread is not Level 8. At Level 8, it could have been easily abused with a Level 4 monster on the field. This way, it itself can become a Level 4 after the level deduction, enabling a Rank 4 Xyz Summon. Detaching Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread as an Xyz Material brings it back to the graveyard, allowing a player to reuse its effect again.
Destrudo, the Dead Drake of Dread is splashable, and when combined with other cards, makes for a good engine to enable and plays and accelerate summons. While it may not have any immediate impact on the metagame, it is definitely a card worthy of your attention.
